COREY A. BECHLER
, Painting

Corey A. BechlerCorey A. Bechler grew up in Moscow until the age of 21 when he moved into his family's log cabin in Benzie County, where he now creates dot paintings. He graduated from Hillsdale College, earning a triple major and a teaching degree. While he took some art classes in college, he is mainly self-taught in painting.

His works are collected by public and private institutions throughout the United States for their bold colors, unique subject matter and technique. Bechler's paintings depict nostalgic scenes of children in happier times - a day at the beach, rowing a boat, kicking a soccer ball or playing leap frog.

About "Dots"
Dot by dot, color by color, a painting is created. Using layers of paint, I build up a unique and unmistakable texture. This exhibit is born of my love of Aboriginal paintings, Georges Seurat, and the beach.

My paintings are a mix of contemporary folk art and of simple, whimsical objects. Using hand-mixed paints, the paintings may have up to 15 layers of dots and sometimes up to 20 shades of the same color, giving the them a rich depth and texture.

I believe that water and its icons are filled with an incredible sense of drama. The people portrayed in my work are experiencing their own personal, emotional, and physical dramas; water provides a wonderful arena upon which they can travel. Water has its own personality; the horizon itself has a romance. You look at it and wonder what lies beyond.

All my work is original - I do not create prints. The paintings are tedious and time consuming (taking up to six months to complete) but the complex simplicity that is achieved can be astounding. The only way to capture the true texture and beauty of a painting is to view the original.
