New Collage & Assemblage by Joyce Butler Petrakovitz
After a successful 25 year career as a potter, artist Joyce Butler Petrakovitz decided to explore other mediums to which she was exposed as an art student. Now an accomplished painter, she has decided to "cut loose" again with collage and assemblage. Her new work is at the same time mysterious and familiar; whimsical and thought-provoking.
Joyce became seriously interested in the visual arts field while studying dance performance at Interlochen Arts Academy in the late 1960s. She embarked upon her professional career in ceramics after graduating from The Center for Creative Studies (Detroit, Michigan) in 1974. And in 1994, she started experimenting with paint and pastels.
Her recent exploration has been an “exciting departure” from the pastel landscapes and more traditional acrylic paintings that she has concentrated on for the past decade. Joyce’s original inspiration came when she painted old cigar boxes that she came across. That lead to taking advantage of the 3-D aspect of the pieces, and adding more paint, found objects, cut-out paper images and text inside. Each one has developed its own theme based upon her personal interests and images that she found visually stimulating. The results are meant to evoke a visual message and reflect the artist’s personal observations and sense of humor.
“I particularly enjoy the idea of recycling materials and found objects. I find I look at everything differently now, evaluating it for its potential future use,” says Joyce. “I can see I’m going to need a lot more storage space!”
The artist makes her home in Cadillac, Michigan. She can be reached at 231-779-8150 or petroart@charter.net.
